RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Translate various texts linked to the activities (e.g., email templates, website text, facilitation and survey questions, executive summaries, etc..) from English into Dutch.
  • Identify and engage Belgian Dutch-speaking focus group and survey participants, ensuring that they are diverse and correspond to the needed demographic groups (18-40 years old) by capitalising on meaningful relationships with Belgian Dutch-speaking civil society organisations (e.g. networks of students’ associations, youth organisations, and organisations of underrepresented and typically marginalised groups).
  • Communicate regularly through calls and emails with Debating Europe staff to convey project updates and share highlights of findings. Working closely with Debating Europe’s staff to implement the 4 thematic focus group series and survey in Belgium’s Dutch-speaking community.
  • Facilitate 4x focus group series with Belgian Dutch-speaking participants divided into a series of 1h-long online sessions between July and mid-September 2023 (ca. 10-20 1h online sessions).
  • Engage another group of Belgian Dutch-speaking citizens from different demographics (16-18 and 40-65+) in a short online survey to complement the focus group findings in autumn 2023.
  • Coordinate with the Belgian French-speaking facilitator and summarise the key findings of each focus group series and survey into 4 distinct reports in English, capturing key quotes of participants as well as the salient issues and an additional 1-pager summarising the cross-thematic trends in Belgium under Debating Europe’s editorial guidance.
  • Record and share the detailed demographic report of participants from each of the focus groups, with due respect to GDPR guidelines.
  • Ensure the reports have balance and consistency and are in line with the editorial strategy defined by Debating Europe’s staff.

KEY REQUIREMENTS :

  • Native Dutch speaker and fluent in English with strong report writing & translation skills.
  • Experience in facilitating citizens’ panels, focus groups, assemblies, or similar.
  • Excellent interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Extremely reliable, highly organised, and with attention to detail.
  • Start-up mindset and hands-on attitude.
  • Proven ability to work independently in coordination with an international team.
  • A keen interest in and experience with citizen engagement and democracy-related policies is a major plus.
  • Experience conceiving and managing data-driven projects, highly desirable.

MORE INFORMATION ON THE PROJECT : Our multilingual focus group project will comprise the following 4 themes :

  • Economy and the cost-of-living crisis
  • Europe's position in the world
  • Democracy and the rule of law
  • Climate emergency
  • The overall aim is to simultaneously gather comparative data on the perceptions, fears, wishes, and suggestions of citizens in different EU countries on these themes. We’ll present these findings in a report to be released in early 2024 and used as a basis for citizen-driven panel discussions with policymakers ahead of the 2024 European Parliament elections. We aim to involve up to 2,024 European citizens from at least 5 different EU countries in online focus groups and surveys. DEBATING EUROPE WILL PROVIDE :

  • At least three online briefings (introductory, mid-term, and final).
  • Guidance on facilitating focus groups, including a facilitator’s guide.
  • Template texts for liaising with the focus group and survey participants.
  • Necessary tools for hosting the online focus groups and running the online survey.
