We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic, passionate, and communicative researcher who holds a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering and / or computer science, with outstanding academic achievements. Candidates should demonstrate a strong affinity for EMC, artificial intelligence and measurement techniques.

In this PhD project, we will explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) as a game-changing tool for design engineers to diagnose and resolve electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues in the post-deployment phase of safety-critical products. Designing electronics with EMC considerations is a demanding task that traditionally relies on the expertise of highly experienced engineers, honed over years of practice in implementing, validating, and debugging design techniques. However, pinpointing the root cause of an EMC problem and identifying the optimal solution remains a persistent and complex challenge.

The PhD candidate will develop self-learning diagnostic AI tools capable of assisting engineers in identifying the origin of EMC problems and proposing the most effective solutions. These tools will leverage a wealth of historical data from EMC measurements and design techniques, drawn from decades of expert system development in the medical technology sector by leading companies like Barco and Philips.

This project is part of the PATTERN Doctoral Network, which is built on the conviction that AI can significantly enhance holistic EMI (electromagnetic interference) solutions. By uncovering previously unknown patterns in the complex interactions between humans, devices, and their environments, AI can support the development of safe, sustainable, and design-forward strategies for mitigating EMC challenges. PATTERN unites expertise across four critical areas : electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), medical engineering, risk management, and sustainability management, driving innovation toward a safer, smarter, and more sustainable future.

At the M-Group at KU Leuven Bruges Campus, we are driving innovation in interconnected, intelligent mechatronic systems. A dedicated part of our team focuses on electromagnetic risk management, addressing the latest challenges in electromagnetic interference and advancing the future of this rapidly evolving field.

This is more than just a PhD position—it’s an opportunity to be part of an internationally recognized network of researchers through the MSCA PATTERN Doctoral Network (https : / / pattern-dn.eu). As a PhD candidate, you will be based at KU Leuven’s Bruges Campus, with exciting secondments at Barco and Philips.

We offer :

  • A fully funded 3-year PhD scholarship (extendable to 4 years).
  • Specialized doctoral training to boost your expertise.
  • Opportunities to collaborate in groundbreaking research and participate in international conferences.
  • Access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and a range of university benefits (health insurance, etc.).
  • A dynamic, passionate team of fellow PhD students and test engineers.
