The research group HeartKOR at KU Leuven is part of the Department of Mathematics, and specialised in the modelling and analysis of complex systems. The group's main focus lies on increasing the understanding of spatiotemporal excitation patterns in the heart muscle during heart rhythm disorders.
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow for our project "Bayesian Inversion of Cardiac Electrograms for Patient-Specific Analysis (BICEPS)", a KU Leuven-funded interdisciplinary research collaboration between profs. Hans Dierckx, Giovanni Samaey, Piet Claus and Peter Haemers. The project aim is to develop uncertainty quantification techniques for computer simulations of the heart and future cardiac digital twins, based on patient measurements.
To achieve this goal, massive forward solves are required, which we aim to speed up by coupling microscale electrophysiology models to mesoscale models, to allow faster time-stepping.

Responsibilities
You will collaborate with the 3 PhD students on the BICEPS project to pursue its overall goal. Your responsabilities will be in the development and implementation of the multiple-timescale forward model, and its integration into the Bayesian workflow.
Profile
Candidates should have (or be about to obtain) a PhD degree in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or a closely related subject, and have a strong background in numerical methods and simulation. Expertise on multi-scale or multi-fidelity approaches, methods for Bayesian uncertainty quantification and / or or numerical heart modeling are positive factors. Good command of English is required.
Offer
We offer a postdoctoral position initially for one year. Funding is secured to extend the position for one additional year. You will receive a competitive salary / scholarship and will be able to join a dynamic team of scientists. The research group is based in the city of Kortrijk (KU Leuven campus KULAK, Flanders, Belgium). This position involves a collaboration with the Numerical Analysis and Applied Mathematics group (NUMA) in Leuven and the Department of Cardiology at Leuven University Hospital. The starting date of this position lies between 1 January and 1 October 2024.
