The PhD researcher will study the natural philosophical treatise De memoria and its contribution to medieval philosophy. Central in the research is the 13th-century Latin translation of Aristotle’s De memoria (part of the Parva Naturalia), made by James of Venice and William of Moerbeke. You are expected to critically edit one of these translations according to the standards of the Aristoteles Latinus series, which implies not only a study of the Latin tradition but also of its Greek sources. In addition, you are expected to study the reception of this text in medieval thought, specifically in the form of marginalia.
More information about the project or about the Aristoteles Latinus project can be requested by e-mail.
The De Wulf-Mansion Centre for Ancient, Medieval, and Renaissance Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy, KU Leuven, invites applications for a PhD position as part of the international project Aristoteles Latinus.
