We are hiring a Head of R&D to lead internal research programs and scientific partnerships, driving innovation at the intersection of plant biotechnology, breeding, and gene editing.

RT Consulting is supporting an early-stage biotech company at the forefront of plant science innovation in its strategic recruitment for a Head of R&D.

Position OverviewWe are seeking a Head of R&D to lead scientific partnerships and internal R&D initiatives, ensuring effective collaboration with external stakeholders and fostering innovation within growing internal teams.

The ideal candidate will manage a small interdisciplinary team (5–10 people), oversee high-impact R&D programs, and work closely with top management. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong expertise in breeding, gene editing, and plant biotechnology, combined with solid project management, communication, and leadership skills. A start-up mindset and the ability to thrive in a fast-moving, dynamic environment are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead internal R&D programs and external collaborations with academic and industry partners.
  • Manage and mentor a multidisciplinary team, while providing strategic direction in line with company goals.
  • Ensure scientific and technical excellence in experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation.
  • Develop project timelines, deliverables, and progress reports for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to grant applications and strategic documents supporting growth and partnership development.
  • Communicate scientific results clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Represent the company at scientific conferences, industry events, and partner meetings as needed.

  • Qualifications

  • PhD in Genetics, Plant Biotechnology, Agricultural Sciences, or a related field is mandatory.
  • At least 10 years of management experience in R&D, particularly in the seed / breeding industry.
  • Proven track record in managing R&D projects and scientific partnerships.
  • Strong knowledge of gene editing technologies (e.g., CRISPR), breeding technologies, and AI applications in crop science.
  • Proficiency in experimental design, statistical analysis, and interpreting complex data sets.
  • Exceptional project management, communication, and reporting skills, with experience in writing grants and securing funding.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, managing multiple priorities.
  • Some travel required for conferences and partner visits.
