Linux Engineer – 6 Month Contract – Antwerp
For an operationally critical environment in Antwerp, we are looking for an experienced Linux Engineer to support and maintain the Linux infrastructure that underpins automation platforms and mission-critical operational systems. This role focuses on ensuring stability, security, and high availability within an environment where infrastructure reliability is essential for continuous operations.
You will play a key role in maintaining hardened Linux environments, resolving incidents, and supporting systems that enable real-time operational processes.
The role
As Linux Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining and supporting Linux-based infrastructure used by critical operational applications, automation platforms, and integration systems. A large part of the role involves incident response, troubleshooting, and ensuring system stability in production environments.
You will work closely with application engineers, automation teams, and network specialists to ensure the underlying OS layer remains secure, standardized, and reliable.
The environment includes physical servers, virtual platforms, and high-availability systems that support continuous operations.
Key responsibilities
- Provide 2nd-line support for Linux infrastructure environments
- Diagnose and resolve OS-level incidents in production systems
- Perform live troubleshooting and restore services within SLA timelines
- Install, configure, and maintain Linux servers (RHEL, Ubuntu, Debian)
- Manage users, permissions, and authentication (LDAP, PAM, Sudo)
- Perform patching, upgrades, and lifecycle management
- Monitor system performance, storage, and resource usage
- Maintain backup and recovery procedures
- Automate operational tasks using Bash or Python
- Use configuration management tools such as Ansible
- Implement system hardening and security configurations
- Support virtualization platforms (VMware, KVM)
- Support container environments where applicable
- Work in an on-call / 24-7 support rotation when required
- Perform root cause analysis after incidents
Required skills & experience
- Strong experience with Linux system administration
- Experience with RHEL, Ubuntu, or Debian environments
- Proven experience in production troubleshooting
- Solid knowledge of networking and storage configuration
- Experience with virtualization platforms (VMware, KVM, or similar)
- Experience with scripting (Bash, Python)
- Experience working in high-availability environments
- Ability to work under pressure in critical operational situations
- Fluency in Dutch
