This is a database platform role rather than a query-tuning one. The estate is mixed — SQL Server at its centre, Azure alongside it, and open-source engines around the edges — and the job is to keep all of it available, fast and recoverable while it moves steadily towards the cloud.
It suits a database engineer who automates what they do twice, who takes high availability and disaster recovery seriously enough to test them, and who writes the runbook before it is needed.
What You Would Be Doing
Install, configure, upgrade, patch and back up database systems on premises and in the cloud.
Design and support high availability and disaster recovery — availability groups, failover clustering, replication and a backup strategy that has actually been restored.
Monitor performance, availability and capacity, and deal with problems before they become incidents.
Build automation — scripts, workflows and pipelines — for administration, monitoring and operational reporting.
Support migration and modernisation towards cloud database services.
Work with the application, infrastructure and cloud teams on performance, reliability and scale.
Keep access control, encryption, auditing and vulnerability management in good order, and the documentation with it.
What you would bring
Expert-level SQL Server administration, tuning and troubleshooting.
Real experience of availability groups, failover clustering, replication and recovery.
